The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has introduced important changes from 1 October 2026, affecting participant funding, support arrangements and payment processes.

Here is a quick overview of the key changes and what they mean for NDIS participants and families.

1. Major NDIS Funding Reductions

From 1 October 2026, the Australian Government has introduced reductions to funding allocations in two NDIS support categories:

  • 50% reduction: Social, Economic and Community Participation funding.

  • 10% reduction: Improved Daily Living Skills funding.

These reductions will be introduced gradually over 12 months as plans are created, reassessed or renewed.

Importantly, certain supports are excluded, including disability-related health services, high-intensity supports and employment supports. Essential daily living supports, such as personal care and household assistance, are not directly affected by these reductions. Read the official NDIS update.

2. New NDIS Payment Rules From 15 October

From 15 October 2026, the NDIA will introduce additional checks on payment claims submitted more than 90 days after a service was delivered.

These claims may be held for up to 28 days for verification. Participants, providers and plan managers are encouraged to submit claims promptly. Read the official NDIS payment update.

3. Changes to Supported Independent Living (SIL)

The NDIA has updated its SIL operational guideline to clarify funding decisions, individual support arrangements and provider registration requirements.

These updates aim to improve clarity and accountability in supported living services. View the latest official NDIS news.

4. New Thriving Kids Initiative

The first phase of the Australian Government's Thriving Kids initiative commenced on 1 October 2026.

This initiative provides additional information and resources for families of children with developmental needs, with further supports planned for future rollout. Read about Thriving Kids.

What Should NDIS Participants Do?

If you are an NDIS participant, now is a good time to:

  • Review your current NDIS funding and support arrangements.

  • Check when your next plan reassessment is due.

  • Speak with your Support Coordinator about potential funding changes.

  • Stay informed through official NDIS announcements.

Remember: Not every participant will experience an immediate funding reduction. The impact depends on your individual NDIS plan and support needs.
